Sudbury Five hand Halifax fourth December loss

SUDBURY, ON — A 70-point second half from the National Basketball League of Canada's newest franchise, the Sudbury Five, was too much for the Halifax Hurricanes to handle on Sunday afternoon. Halifax dropped the first game of their Ontario road trip 120-110 at the Sudbury Community Arena in Ontario.

After trading buckets with a Hurricanes for much of the first half, the Five's offence came alive in the third quarter to build up a lead that Halifax was never able to chip all the way down.

The Hurricanes made noise early by forcing turnovers and getting steals from the Five's offence. The Hurricanes had 13 steals for the game — two of which came from Joel Kindred, whose transition offence led the Hurricanes with 24 points on 10-16 shooting, including three from beyond the arc.

Big man Jordan Washington muscled his way to 19 points and eight rebounds off the bench.

Backup point guard Malcolm Duvivier played big minutes on Sunday. He hit a couple of big three's on his way to 15 points.

Rhamel Brown also put together a solid afternoon, netting 12 points to go with eight boards and two blocked shots.

The Five's high-powered offence proved difficult to slow down in the second half. Sudbury had six players finished with at least 10 points and three with at least 20 points, led by the hot-shooting Braylon Rayon who had a game-high 34 points, which included five made three-pointers.

The Hurricanes travel to Windsor, ON next to face the Express on Wednesday, Dec. 19. That game is scheduled to start at 8 p.m. AST. Check HalifaxHurricanes.ca or follow the team on social media for details on how to catch that game live online on Wednesday evening.

The Hurricanes will return home to Scotiabank Centre in Halifax on Friday, Dec. 28 at 7 p.m. to host the Cape Breton Highlanders for Noise Night where the first 1,000 fans will a free noisemaker.

Then on Sunday, Dec. 30, they will host the St. John's Edge at 2 p.m. for Family Fun Zone, which opens at 1 p.m. At halftime, the Hurricanes will feature a Paper Airplane Toss for a chance to win $500 cash.  The Hurricanes will face some new competition that afternoon with the St. John's Edge, who recently signed former NBA Champion for the Boston Celtics, Glen "Big Baby" Davis.
